Carstairs Junction Remodelling

West Coast main line will undergo significant engineering work from 4 March to 4 June 2023. Information about routes can be found at National Rail inquiries.

HUGE INVESTMENTS TO RAISE CROSS-BORDER RELIABILITY

A crucial portion of the West Coast Mainline, which connects Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, passes via Carstairs Junction.

The current track, together with any accompanying signals and overhead lines, will be reconfigured and renewed during this project.

The platform at Carstairs station will also be improved.

By the spring of 2024, the full project is expected to be finished.

All areas of the Junction will be under construction day and night between the early hours of Saturday, March 4, and the early hours of Monday, March 20, 2023.

Part of the junction will reopen during phase two of the project, which runs from Monday, March 20, to Friday, April 21, allowing certain trains to run directly to Edinburgh during the week. In some areas of the Junction during the weekdays and all of the Junction during the weekends, work will continue to be done.

The line will be open during the week and completely closed on weekends during the last phase, which runs from Saturday, April 22, to Sunday, June 4. Work on these weekends will take place from Friday night until Monday morning. ScotRail services to and from Carstairs will not operate for the full three months starting on March 4. ScotRail will offer a variety of alternate travel alternatives until Tuesday, May 30, when Carstairs station will reopen.

The complex Carstairs junction needs routine maintenance. Speed limits are frequently imposed, which negatively affects both the efficiency of operations and the trips of passengers.

The investment is concentrated on providing improvements to the areas that matter most to passengers and freight users, with a focus on punctuality enhancements, total journey time reductions, and infrastructure reliability enhancements.

The upgraded track, signalling, and overhead electrification will increase line speeds, infrastructure dependability, and timeliness on routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh via Carstairs as well as on the west coast main line. In order to allow longer trains, our new flexible plan will also have a freight loop.

What innovations will the project provide?
As part of the new railway infrastructure, we are building the biggest freight loop in Scotland. When complete this will be capable of holding a train 775 metres long. Other modernisations to the junction include a new power supply which allows us to switch off the overhead lines remotely to allow us to carry out maintenance more efficiently and reduce the amount of time the railway is closed.
